Colloquial Spanish vocabulary and phrases related to talking about sex in Spanish

This lesson is part of my “Street Spanish” course which is aimed at giving you all of the necessary Spanish vocabulary and phrases for speaking colloquially in Spanish.

In this lesson we will learn how to describe various sexual acts in Spanish and talk about sex in Spanish in general with lots of useful everyday Spanish vocabulary and phrases such as Echar un polvo (To have sex), Acostarse (To go to bed with), Correrse (To orgasm), and Poner los cuernos (To cheat on one’s partner).

The Spanish vocabulary and phrases that you will find in this course are not the kind that you will find in regular textbooks and some should be used with caution as they are quite vulgar, but I want to give you an insight into exactly how Spanish people really speak on the street.

Relaciones sexuales: Sexual intercourse

Hacer sexo: To have sex
Hacer el amor: To make love
Hacerlo: To do it
Lo hice con él/ella: I did it with him/her

Echar un polvo: To have sex

La primavera by Estopa was the first single from the 2011 Estopa album 2.0. Estopa 2.0 was the seventh studio album from the band and also featured other hit single Me quedaré. In its first week on sale the album Estopa 2.0 got to the number one spot in Spain with more than 40,000 albums sold. Three months after its release, Estopa 2.0 sold over 80,000 copies, becoming double platinum.

Hemicraneal by Estopa was a single off their 2008 album Allenrok that reached number one in the Spanish charts. Allenrok was the fifth album from Estopa and contained other hit singles Cuando amanece, Cuerpo triste, and Pesadilla. The title “Allenrok” was a tribute to their hometown Cornellá (Cornellà de Llobregat in Barcelona) as it is Cornellá in reverse, substituting the “C” for a “K”.

Ya no me acuerdo by Estopa is one of the few Estopa songs which sees younger Muñoz brother, José Muñoz, taking lead vocal duties. Usually José plays guitar and provides backing vocals to his brother David, but here we see that he can also carry it just as well as lead vocalist.

How to swear in Spanish: Common Spanish swear words and insults

This lesson is part of my “Colloquial Spanish” course which is aimed at giving you all of the necessary Spanish vocabulary and expressions for speaking colloquially in Spanish.

This is the video connected with a previous post in this course about “El lenguaje soez” – The Spanish “Low language”: Spanish swear words, Spanish insults, Spanish vulgarities, and Spanish profanities.

In this lesson we learn various common Spanish swear words and insults including: “¡Mierda!” (S**t!), “¡Joder!” (F**K!) or “¡Cabrón!” (Bastard!).

Everything in this video is vulgar, so use with caution. However, these Spanish swear words are much more widely used metaphorically in a naughty rather than rude sense and are nothing like their literal translations in English which sound much much harsher and more aggressive.

I hope nobody takes offence to the material in this video. I have included it as a bit of fun, but I also feel it is extremely useful as many Spanish people really do use these naughty Spanish words on a daily basis. I want to give you an insight into exactly how Spanish people really speak on the street.

Estopa Pastillas De Freno was another Estopa single released from the 2004 album ¿La calle es tuya? This is classic Estopa rumba rock from the Muñoz brothers David and José.

Estopa Fuente De Energía was the first Estopa single off their 2004 album La calle es tuya. The Estopa video features Spanish actor Santi Millán who is a famous face in Spanish cinema, theatre and TV.

Spanish band Estopa are a popular duo from Cornellà, Barcelona, Spain. The band consists of Muñoz brothers José and David, who sing a unique blend of sounds reflecting many genres, including rock, rumba and flamenco. They were born in Extremadura, but grew up in Cornellà de llobregat, a suburb of Barcelona. They have been compared to the band Los Chichos, a rumba band from Spain, who were popular in the 1970s. José Muñoz is the younger brother, born in 1978. He plays guitar and sings backing vocals, as well as lead vocals on a few songs. David Muñoz is the older brother, born in 1976. He is the lead singer and also plays some guitar. David Muñoz is generally the more outgoing of the two.

José and David attended college for a short time before deciding that it was not for them. After quitting their studies, they worked for a factory manufacturing automobile parts for the company SEAT. This is also where they got the band name “Estopa”: from the expression used by their boss to keep everybody on task, “Dale Estopa a la maquina.” It was in that factory that they began composing their earliest songs. Their first album, “Estopa,” was released October 19, 1999 and one of its songs, “La Raja de Tu Falda” became an instant hit and an Estopa classic. Other Estopa songs such as “Tu Calorro,” “Suma y Sigue,” and “El Del Medio De Los Chichos” (an ode to Los Chichos the band), have also remained steady fan favorites.

Estopa followed the release of the album “Estopa” with their next album “Destrangis” in 2001, which sold 250,000 copies in its first two weeks. Destrangis also opened the doors for the band to tour in Latin America. Their fourth Estopa album, “¿La Calle Es Tuya?” was released in 2004. Though it did not receive such good ratings as “Estopa” and “Destrangis” it still became an immediate hit with songs like “Fuente de Energía” and “Apagón.” The band experimented with more rock-orientated sounds on this album, while still maintaining their unique rumba and flamenco flavored sounds that they had formed in their first albums. In late 2005, the band released their highly-anticipated album “Voces de Ultrarumba” which has been considered Estopa in its purest form. The disc includes many songs that Estopa had written many years before, but were not able to record due to limits on each disc. Of particular popularity were the songs “No Quiero Verla Más” and “Malabares.”

Honing your Spanish skills in Barcelona

Barcelona is a thriving metropolis and Spain’s second largest city. Millions of visitors flock to the city every year enjoy its sunny weather, architectural attractions and vibrant nightlife. But Barcelona holds another great advantage if you happen to be interested in languages. Despite being the capital of Catalonia, a region with its own language and heritage, Barcelona is nonetheless an excellent place to pick up and practise Spanish.

The most important tip is to begin as you mean to go on. As a visitor, people will often assume that you don’t know any Spanish, so make a special effort to speak the language right from the beginning: at the airport, to the taxi driver and when checking into your hotel or holiday apartment rental.

To market, to market

Going to an outdoor market to buy fresh produce is an integral part of the traditional Mediterranean lifestyle. As a visitor, heading to one of these colourful places is not only a great cultural experience; it also provides the chance to practise some essential vocabulary. Take the bull by the horns and address the stall-holders in Spanish. Try not to point; instead express what you want to order verbally. Start simple: Un kilo de manzanas rojas, for example.

Where? Try the Mercat de la Boquería, a varied and lively market just off La Rambla.

Retail therapy

If you’ve had any Spanish lessons, it’s likely that one of the earliest topics you came across was how to talk to a shop assistant. And as a visitor to Barcelona, the chances are you’ll want to buy a few souvenirs, or recuerdos, as the Spanish call them. But a word of warning: to truly hone your language skills avoid the many gift shops aimed at tourists, where the assistants will probably speak to you in English. Instead, go off the beaten track to find nicer gifts and more chances to practise your Spanish.

Where? Head to Passeig de Grácia for upmarket luxury, Barri Gótic for high street shopping, and El Born for unique boutiques and vintage goods.

Don’t forget to eat

A day of shopping and sightseeing can be pretty hard work. No doubt you’ll be starving after your efforts. So what better way to recover than to treat yourself to a meal in one of Barcelona’s brilliant eateries? As always, steer away from anywhere on the beaten tourist track; restaurants on busy streets with signs in English generally serve up mediocre food, inflated prices and little opportunity to speak Spanish. Instead, explore side streets and get talking to locals, who will give you inside tips on where to get a meal worth eating.

Where? Paella by the sea is always a great option – venture away from the touristy Barceloneta beach and you’ll find more authentic local eateries on beaches like the Nova Icária.

Go back to school

If you have the opportunity to spend a few weeks or more in Barcelona, why not enrol on a Spanish language course? The city has many language schools, as well as the universities, where you can sign up for a series of classes. As any language student knows, you can’t beat learning from a native speaker.

Where? Before you make the trip, head to the biggest resource available – the Internet – to find classes and compare prices so that you arrive ready to begin. ¡Buena suerte!
